Welcome to Turnba.com, the Candle Making, Supplies and Accessories Website!
We hope you can stay a while and learn a whole lot about candle making by hand and/or by machine as well as about candle supplies and accessories. And while you are in the process of absorbing instructions and learning, we also hope that you will be having fun.
As you might have expected, candles can be made by hand as well as by specially designed machines. So I would like to tell you a little about the two distinct methods and you can choose whichever one suits you the best.
Instructions and Guides for Creating Candles by Hand:
- You will need to prepare a medium to large size pot, a large tin can (an empty coffee can will do just fine as long as it fits into the pot you’ve prepared), candle wax, a candle wick or a soft string like knitting yarn and potholders or a few rags.
- Fill the pot with water and bring it to a bubbling boil.
- Lower the heat to keep the water boiling slowly and place the empty tin can into its center.
- Drop chunks of the candle wax into the can and watch the wax begin to slowly melt into a thick liquid.
- Hold an approximate 3 inch length of the candle wick or the string and dip the rest into the melted wax and then pull it out again. After 30 seconds or so, repeat the process of dipping, pulling it out and waiting for 30 seconds or so and so on.
- This process will begin to form your candle. Depending on the thickness you wish to obtain, you can repeat the process over and over again.
- Once you are satisfied with your candle, tie the tip you were holding to a hanger until it cools off completely.
- Snip the excess wick or string leaving only about half of an inch for lighting.
- Warning: Don’t let the water boil too quickly and avoid touching the hot wax with your bare skin.
Instructions and Guides for Creating Machine Made Candles which tends to be quicker, less messy and safer:
- Be sure that the candle making machine you select is UL approved for safety. Take a look at Candle Creations at Science-City.com.
- To make things as easy as possible for your candle creation project, select a machine that comes equipped with at least one mold but, of course, more molds in various sizes and shapes are better as they will provide you with more options.
- Be sure to have high quality candle wax ready and prepared.
- If you want colorful candles than you would need color granules.
- You will also need the wicking and the wick holder as well as a mold sealer.
- As far as I know, all candle making machines come with a set of easy instructions, which you should have no trouble following.
So, whether you decided to create your candles manually by hand or by using a candle making machine, you need to remember that you are dealing with hot wax which can cause severe burns. So, you must be very careful!
One more issue I must caution you about — you much enjoy the process. That is the primary rule of this game.
The following are a few interesting fact about candles which you may or may not already know:
- Most modern day candles are made of paraffin but they can also be made of beeswax, soy, tallow or gel.
- When a match is lit and held up to the candle wick it ignites, melts a small portion of the candle which vaporizes some of the fuel which then combines with the oxygen in the room’s atmosphere to create the flame.
- Ancient Egyptians and early Cretans began making candles from beeswax at around 3000 BC. That’s about 5,000 years ago!
